This presentation celebrates Ocean Week by exploring the local oceans around Sidney and the Salish Sea as living places of connection, wonder, and responsibility. We will highlight the marine mammals that make this region so remarkable, and reflect on why healthy ocean ecosystems matter for the well-being of wildlife, communities, and future generations.
We will also acknowledge the deep Indigenous roots of this area, including the W̱SÁNEĆ and Coast Salish peoples, whose long relationship with these waters reminds us that land and sea are not separate from culture, identity, and stewardship. Their knowledge and history help us understand the ocean not only as a habitat, but as a living relative and a source of continuity across generations.
